Fix or Facilitate?

Milton Trager embraced the notion of the client being the practitioner, and the practitioner being the “instigator” or facilitator.

After many years of problem-solving and fixing in PT, it is a relief to give Trager sessions where I can let go of that continual challenge. Learning that my responsibility is providing space for a client to feel seen, heard, and understood, and to provide a feeling through touch and movement, is life-changing for this practitioner. Allowing clients to respond in their own unique way, with the expectation that the body’s wisdom will do the necessary healing, is life-changing for clients.

I love approaching clients knowing that they aren’t broken or in need of fixing. They are organisms that are already whole, not machines in need of repair! If we aren’t fixing, then what are we facilitating in Trager?

Here are a few things that come to my mind that I’m facilitating:

  • Interoceptive awareness
  • Homuncular refreshment (from touch and movement awakening proprioceptors)
  • Evenness of tone and volume/space
  • Well-distributed response to gravity and ground reaction forces
  • Fluidity, grace, ease, lightness …
  • Joint health from increased proprioception, even tone, and synovial fluid consistency
  • Ability to self-regulate and modulate the nervous system
  • Neuroplasiticity (changing patterns)
  • Feeling that all is well

And yes, we are facilitating relaxation. Milton Trager talked about our work going beyond relaxation, to peace. I’d posit that “beyond relaxation” includes all of the above as well.

I’m curious to know what you would add to this list. Please share your comments below.
